今日から箱根、御殿場、大阪、京都に三泊四日の旅行です。
天気が良いと、この道路からも富士山が見えるはずでした。
We moved on to Hakone, Gotenba, Osaka and Kyoto for 3 nights and 4 days. As my husband and I wanted to show them snow-covered Mt. Fuji, we five went to Hakone by car. Unfortunately, it was very cloudy. We saw only the top of Mt. Fuji from Ashino Lake skyline.
私達夫婦は箱根でアマンダ一家に雪化粧の富士山を見せたくて
あちこち車で回ったのですが、
あいにくの曇りで芦ノ湖スカイラインからわずかに頭が見えただけでした。
とても残念でした。

Our perspective and Nozomi’s perspective differ quite greatly here. This photo is our first glimpse of Mt. Fuji!!! This was tremendously exciting for all of us. The fact that Mt. Fuji was so elusive made the few glimpses we got of it that much more of a monumental thing. I could easily imagine Mt. Fuji as the remote home of some great gods who could decide if and when they wanted to be visible to the mortals below. Knowing that this great mountain was hiding somewhere in the mist made it that much more mysterious!
でもアマンダ一家は私とは違った視点からみてくれていました。
この一瞬見えた富士山に彼らはとても感激してくれました。
神様が良いとされた時だけに見せてもらえるかのような
めったに見れない富士山が見れて感動した、
霞の中に見えた富士山は神秘的だった、と言ってくれました。

Amanda said-
And we also enjoyed delicious coffee and treats at Ashino Lake!
芦ノ湖湖畔にある箱根ホテルでお茶をしました。
お皿の絵のように山々と共に富士山が見えるはずでした。
We headed to Owakudani (volcanic valley). It has been long time since I visited this place. The last time I was here was for my elementary school excursion!
次に大湧谷に向かいました。ここは私にとっても本当に久しぶりの観光地で，何と小学校の修学旅行以来でした（笑）

Amanda said-
This was a fabulous experience. We have had the privilege of visiting two other volcanic valleys before, one in the Caribbean and one in Nicaragua. All three have been strikingly different. This one was SO cold and very mountainous. What an experience!
アマンダ達はカリブ海とニカラグアにある大湧谷にも行った事があるそうですが
それぞれと全く違っていて、箱根の大湧谷は山地で寒いという感想でした。
I believed that they all were enjoying the famous boiled black eggs "Kuro-Tamago" at the time of this photograph.
However, I learned what was really going on in this funny scene.

とんでもない、おかしな誤解をされていました(笑）

The eggshell is black because of being boiled in the hot spring. It is said that seven years is added to your life if you eat this black egg.
温泉の中でゆでられるため、殻が黒くなります。
そして、この黒卵を食べると寿命が７年延びるといわれています。
という説明を夫がしたはずですが・・
Amanda said-
I have to tell a funny story: My mom is very skeptical looking in this photo, because she had misunderstood Tetsuji when he explained about the eggs. She thought the eggs were rotten (it would surely explain the smell). She believed that eating this egg would show some sort of fortitude and bravery and that’s why it was believed to extend your life. Here she is resolutely anticipating a horrible tasting egg. In reality, it was perfectly fine. We all laughed with her about her misperception (and relief!) after. I think she’s awfully brave to be going along with this so willingly.
硫黄のガスの匂いが体に良くないという話と
混ざってしまったらしくサンデイはこの卵が腐っていて、
腐った卵を勇気を持って食べれば寿命が７年延びる，と勘違いしたのでした。
笑ってしまいました。

This was my coldest memory of all of Japan. It was colder by far than Buffalo. It was a crystalline, lung-burning, still-as-glass kind of cold, and I found myself ducking into shops at every turn to try to get warm. Naturally, I would not have traded the experience for all the space heaters in the world!
My mom related to me later that she felt a chill in more ways than one. Remembering our experiences visiting Ellis Island, another historic immigration checkpoint, made us realize that foreigners might have come to this place with fear that their journeys might end at the shores of this freezing lake. It was intriguing to us to have this comparison in mind.
アマンダは日本にいる間，ここが一番寒かった，
バッファローよりずっと寒かったと言っていました。
寒さの質が全く違う、透き通るような寒さと言っていました。
雪も何も降っていないのに
その澄んだ空気が凍り付くように冷たかったということらしいです。
サンデイも凍りつくような寒さを感じていたのです。
そして２人は
かつてエリー島にある移民の検問所に行った時のことを思い出しながら
箱根の関所と比べながら
凍てついた湖の湖畔で無事に通過できないかもしれない、
という恐怖の中にいたかもしれない人々の事を考えていたそうです。
It was cold, but my husband and I didn't feel the weather was so chilly.
Really? We were surprised to hear Amanda's family's perception of the cold.
Buffalo has a reputation of being very cold, but we also never felt that cold in Buffalo. Also, there was central heating in our house, so we never felt cold in Buffalo.
確かに箱根の寒さはありましたが
私達は特別にそんなに寒かったわけでもなく
そんな大げさな〜と言った感じでした。
アマンダ達の寒さに対しての感覚にはびっくりしました。
彼らは寒さで有名なバッファローから来るのだから、
寒さには強いはず、と思っていましたが
意外や意外でした。
でも確かに寒いと言われているバッファローで
私達もセントラルヒーテイングがあったせいか
あまり寒いとは思った事がありませんでした。
ランチは箱根ハイランドホテルの "ラ・フォーレ”で。
とてもユニークでハンバーグを外の ”薪火のかまど” で焼いてくれました。

夕方アマンダの部屋から富士山の全景が見えました。
最高の眺めで一日を終わる事ができました。
Amanda encountered a beautiful view of Mt. Fuji thorough her window in the evening. It was the perfect end to the day.

Amanda said-
I thought I had awoken in a dream. I had feared it would be a “sea turtle” moment – when we were traveling in Barbados, I had returned to my cabin to find a large green sea turtle bobbing in the water outside my window. When I turned around to call my family, it disappeared under the water. I was SO happy that we all got to see the glorious mountain before it disappeared again!
アマンダが目を覚ますと
窓から富士山の全景が見えて、まるで夢を見ているようだったそうです。
彼女が家族とバルバドスに旅行に行った時
＜船室に戻ると
窓から海に浮いている巨大な緑ウミガメを見つけたので
家族を呼びに行っていたら、その間にそのカメは海の中に消えてしまった＞
というウミガメの一件を思い出したそうですが
今回は富士山が消えてしまう前に
私達５人はその美しい富士山を見る事ができたのでした。
ちなみに次の朝、出発前にもう一度同じアングルで見たところ
富士山は見えませんでした。
ここに富士山が見えていたとは信じられないと言ってサンデイが撮った写真です。
夕食は御殿場の”時の栖” (リゾートホテル）の御殿場高原ビールで。
We enjoyed dinner at Kogen Beer in Tokino Sumika (Resort Hotel).
かなりアメリカ風のレストランに行ったのですが
彼らにとっては日本風イタリアンドイツ料理だったようです・・

ちょうど敷地全体がイルミネーションされていて、
その電球の数は約480万球だったそうです。
光のトンネルもあり、今年のテーマは”ねぶた”でした。
印象的なところでした。
The entire premises were illuminated. There was a total of 4.8 million lights. There were long light tunnels; they were impressive.
