旭山動物園〜Asahiyama Zoo

次の日は旭川の旭山動物園に行きました。
新千歳空港駅から旭川までJRの”スーパーカムリ号”で約2時間かかりました。
電車の窓から雪景色を眺めて過ごしました。鎌倉ではこんな雪景色はあまり目にする機会がありません。まるで白いカーペットで覆われているようでした。

The next day, we left for Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa. It took about two hours from Shinchitose airport station to Asahikawa by the JR train "Super Kamuri". We enjoyed the snowy scene from the window of the train. It was amazing. Since we don't have a lot of snow in Kamakura, this snowy scene in Hokkaido was unfamiliar to me; it was a snowy world as if it were covered by a white carpet.

窓の景色が街から美しい山景色になって来ると旭川が近づいてくるのがわかりました。

I learned that we were close to Asahikawa when the scene changed from the city to beautiful mountains.

旭川動物園でペンギンの散歩時間まであまり余裕がなかったのでタクシーを利用しました。ペンギンの散歩時間は午前11時と午後2時半の一日2回あります。
タクシーの運転手さんの話によると、昨日まで吹雪だったのでとても動物園の中を歩ける状態ではなかった、とのことでした。良かった、良かった。

We used a taxi as we were running out of time to get to Asahiyama Zoo to see the penguin walk. The penguin walk takes place two times a day: 11:00a.m. and 2:30p.m.
We were very lucky because the driver said that it had been very cold and they had a snow storm that ended yesterday. During the storm, we couldn't have walked around in the zoo.

ペンギンの散歩は旭山動物園での冬の人気イベントです。
The penguin walk at the Asahiyama Zoo is a very popular event in the winter.

ペンギンが餌を探しに海岸まで歩いて行くという習性を生かしているので、散歩は良い運動にもなっているそうです。

The zoo works with the Emperor penguins' natural behavior of walking to their food source (which is the sea shore) and walking is good exercise in the winter.

約500mの距離を40~50分かけて歩きます。

その散歩姿を見るための長い人の列が見えたのでした。

The walking takes about 40~50 minutes for 500m. So we saw a long line of people waiting to see the penguin walk.

ペンギン達が歩く姿はとてもかわいらしくて、

見ている人達からは歓声が上がっていました。

They are very cute!

The people were excited to see them.

ペンギンを見た後は動物園の中を見て回りました。

Then we walked around the zoo.

次に興味を引いたのはホッキョクグマの姿です。

The next most interesting corner was the polar bear area. 

大きなホッキョクグマのためのプールがあり、

そこでは彼らがダイナミックに泳ぐ姿を私達の目線で見る事が出来ます。

They have a big pool and you can see the strong swimming skills of the polar bear at eye level. 

また、外では堀を利用してホッキョクグマが放し飼いになっています。

そこには地上にカプセルがあり、何だろうと思っていると、

そのカプセルの中に２人の人の顔が見えたのでびっくり。

何とそのカプセルの中から、アザラシの目線でホッキョクグマの姿を見る事が出来る、

というアトラクションのようなものでした。

ホッキョクグマは漂流している氷の下から出てくるアザラシを捕獲するのだそうです。

You can even see their behavior in the free range of the area.

There was a capsule there; I was not sure what it is for. I was surprised that I saw two people's faces inside the capsule. It is a kind of attraction that people can experience having a seal's viewpoint. 

The park says that a polar bear attacks the seals that come out from under the drift ice.

Monkeys in snow. They look very cold!!

カバ館ではカバが泳ぐ姿をみる事も出来ます。

You can also see a hippopotamus swimming in their pool at hippopotamus pavilion.

今回のアマンダとの旅行では

アマンダが日本食に興味を持ってくれて、

楽しんで食べてくれたことを嬉しく思いました。

彼女はラーメンを初めて札幌で食べ、

マグロ、サーモンの寿司やカニを堪能してくれました。

She was excited to eat ramen for the first time at Sapporo, and she enjoyed tuna and salmon sushi and crab meat. 

さて、私達は札幌から無事に帰るつもりでいたところ

帰る日の前の晩に関東地方に10年ぶりの大雪が降った事を知りました。

By the way, we were going to return to Tokyo from Sapporo as planned.

However, we learned that Kanto region had experienced their heaviest snowfall in ten years.

It was the night before we planned to return to Tokyo.

翌朝、札幌から成田までは無事に戻れましたが

アマンダがシンガポールに帰るための飛行機が大幅に遅れ

成田空港で長い時間待たなければなりませんでした。

一方私達夫婦も鎌倉に帰るための列車、バス、タクシーのすべてが

大雪のため運休になり、近くのホテルで夕方まで過ごす事になったのです。

Fortunately, the next morning, we could take a plane and return to Narita. But Amanda's flight to Singapore was very late. She had to wait for a long time at Narita airport. My husband and I were delayed in our return to Kamakura, too. All the means of transportation were canceled because of the heavy snow. We had to spend a long time at a hotel near the airport. 

そして夜中にやっと家にたどり着き

次の朝に見た庭はこのような光景になっていたのでした。

めったに降らないはずの雪が札幌から帰ってくると降っていたとは・・

We returned to Kamakura late, around midnight, and we were surprised the next morning to see this snowy scene from the window. We returned to Kamakura where we seldom have heavy snow from cold Sapporo. 

白い恋人パークとすすきの会場 Shiroi Koibito Park ＆ Susukino Site

続いて札幌の銘菓、”白い恋人”の製造過程を見たり、クッキー作りの体験が出来る

白い恋人パークに行きました。

We continued on to Shiroi Koibito Park.
Shiroi Koibito is a brand of famous cookies in Sapporo. 

パークのあちこちに可愛い雪だるまが飾られていました。

We saw a lot of snowmen here and there. They are very cute!

チョコレートラウンジでコーヒータイム。

窓から美しい山が見えました。

We enjoyed cake and coffee at the chocolate lounge together, while enjoying a mountain view from the window.

インフォメーションブースに座っていたリンカーン。

どうしてここにアメリカ16代大統領がいるのか、謎でした。

なぜか、蓄音機ギャラリーもありました。

We ran into President Lincoln at an information booth. Why is the 16th American president Abraham Lincoln here? Somehow there was also a gramophone gallery there.

外に出ると暗くなっていて、中庭はライトアップされていてきれいでした。

It was dark when I came out to the garden, and we enjoyed the light up scenery.

白い恋人パークを後にして、すすきの会場に氷の彫刻を見に行きました。

We went to enjoy ice sculptures in the Susukino site after we left Shiroi Koibito Park. 

氷の彫刻はクリスタルのようにきれいでした。

氷の中の魚も印象的でした。

Those are very beautiful, like crystal! It was impressive to see the fish in ice. 

札幌雪祭り〜 Snow Festival in Sapporo

光陰矢の如し。もう春です。
前回ブログを書いてから９ヶ月も経ってしまいました。
その間、夫と私は第２の人生をスタートしました。
夫は退職後、英語とポルトガル語のツアーガイドを始め、
私は生活相談員として再び働き始めました。
そして２人で休みが取れた時には旅行を楽しんでいます。

The time has wings. It is already spring now! I can't believe that nearly nine months have passed since I wrote my last blog post. My husband and I started our "second life." He started working as a tour guide in English and Portuguese, and I started to work again as a care worker. We enjoy traveling when we have holidays at the same time. 

今回、シンガポールの大学でインストラクターをしているアマンダが春節を利用して日本に来てくれたので一緒に札幌に行ってきました。

We went to Sapporo with Amanda when she came to Japan to see me and my husband during Chinese New Year. She is a professor of communication and instructs at SIM in Singapore. We are very happy to see each other again.

夫と私は札幌雪まつりに行く事に決めていました。
夏の北海道には行った事がありますが冬に行った事はありません。
アマンダと羽田で待ち合わせて、北海道までは約1.5時間のフライトでした。
札幌に２泊し、札幌雪まつり、旭山動物園、白い恋人パークに行くという旅程でした。

My husband and I decided that we would enjoy the Snow Festival in Sapporo (in Hokkaido) with her. We have never gone to Sapporo in the winter because we go to Hokkaido in the summer to escape the heat in Kamakura. We arranged to meet her at the Haneda airport. It was about a 1.5 hour flight. We stayed two nights in Sapporo. Our itinerary included going to the Sapporo Snow Festival, Asahiyama Zoo and Shiroi Koibito Park. 

私は雪まつり会場で滑って転ぶのが何よりも心配で
靴の上から装着できる滑り止めのスリップガードを買って持っていきました。
これは本当に便利でした。

I supposed that it might be very cold, and I bought ice cleats for us three because I didn't want to slip on the icy roads. They really helped us. 

 

ホテルでチェックアウトを済ませ、雪まつりの会場に・・

We went to the Snow Festival soon after we checked in to our hotel.

滝川クリステルさんの”おもてなし”

2020年の東京オリンピック招致のフランス語でのスピーチはとても印象的で

彼女が使った　”おもてなし”という言葉は2013年の流行語大賞になりました。

She welcomed us with her hospitality. Her speech in French to campaign for having the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020 was very impressive and the word "Omotenashi (hospitality)" became popular and became a word of the year in 2013.

雪まつり会場は、大通り会場、すすきの会場、つどーむ会場の３つがありました。
一番大きい大通り会場には、
自衛隊や札幌市民による力作の５つの大きな雪像などがあり、
すすきの会場には60の氷の彫刻、つどーむ会場では北海道を体験できるとのことです。

There were 3 sites: Odori site, Susukino site and Tsudome site at the festival. Odori site is the biggest site. There are five big snow sculptures by the Ground Self-Defense Force and residents in Sapporo at the Odori site. There are 60 ice sculptures in Susukino site. There are about 20 sculptures; you can have a unique Hokkaido experience in Tsudome with the information you read in the brochures provided when you arrive.

I read in a brochure that it was constructed out of 2250 tons of snow.

夜、ホテルの窓からライトアップされた雪像も楽しめました。
ライトが色々な色に変わり、とてもきれいでした。

We enjoyed the light up snow sculptures from our hotel window that night. The light changed colors. They were very beautiful.

雪像を見て回り、写真を撮っている間に雪が少し激しくなり、
アマンダのお気に入りのヴェラ・ブラッドリーの布のバックパックが
濡れてしまわないかと心配しましたが、
パウダー状の雪で手で払うときれいに落ちたのでした。

While we were seeing snow sculptures and taking photos, it was snowing a little hard. I worried if Amanda's Vera Bradley back pack might be wet, but I did not need to worry. The snow was like powder.
