Christmas Cookies~クリスマスクッキー

バッファローを離れサンフランシスコに行くことになり、今は引っ越しの準備で忙しい毎日です。
クリスマスツリーを飾る時間がなくて残念・・と思っていた時、

隣の奥様が手作りのクリスマスクッキーを持って来てくれて、とても嬉しくなりました。

クッキーはこんなに可愛らしく並べられていました。
ハーシ―のクリスマス用の赤や緑のチョコレートも、こんな風にアクセントとして使うとかわいいですね。

We are moving to San Francisco, and I am very busy packing and cleaning. I feel very bad that I don't have time to decorate the Christmas tree this year. At the time I was thinking about this, Phillis, our next-door neighbor, gave me Christmas cookies she baked herself. We were very happy to have a nice present like this.

They were arranged cutely. I learned that it looks very nice to use red and green Hershey's chocolates on platters like this for Christmas.

日本ではスノーボールとも呼ばれています。

どこの国でも愛されているクッキーなのですね。

They are also called Butter Balls or Russian Teacakes. We call them Snow Balls in Japan.

 I learned that these cookies are loved all over the world.

いつ行っても彼女は大歓迎してくれます。クッキーの名前を教えてくれた上に、クリスマスツリーや綺麗に飾られた部屋も見せてくれました。写真に撮ってブログに載せても良いか聞いたところ、とても喜んでくれました。

She is always very welcoming to me whenever I visit. She told me the cookies' names, and she showed me their Christmas tree and decorations as well. I took the pictures of them and asked if I could put them in my blog.  She said she is excited to see it!

クリスマスの雰囲気たっぷりの部屋。

 階段にも沢山のぬいぐるみ。時々愛犬と間違えてしまうそう。

彼も毛がふさふさで目が大きくてかわいいのです。

There are many stuffed animals on the stairs.

She told me that she sometimes mistook them for their dog.

He is also very cute; he has fluffy hair and big eyes.

これが彼女の刺繍したタオルの一つ。

This is a towel that she embroidered.

このタオルを見たら私たちのことを思い出してね、とプレゼントしてくれました。

驚いたことに彼女はクリスマスには毎年11種類のクッキーを焼いて

タオルに刺繍をするそうです。素晴らしいですね。

いつも私たちの事を気にかけてくれる親切なお隣のご夫婦に感謝しています。

親切なお隣に恵まれて本当に良かったです。

たっぷりとクリスマスの雰囲気を味あわせていただきました。

I was very happy that she gave the embroidered towel to remember them and living in Buffalo.

I was very impressed that that she baked 11 kinds of cookies and embroidered towels for Christmas every year. I admire her talents.  We thank them for always taking care of us. We are very lucky to have nice next-door neighbors.  I was very happy to enjoy their house at Christmas time.

Snowy days~ 雪の日々

雪のシーズン到来です。12月1日に初雪が降りました。
午前中出かけていて、お昼過ぎに帰ってくると車庫の前はかなりの雪が積もっていて

タイヤが空回りして前に進まない、という怖い思いをしました。もう一度バックして道路に出て
そのまま一気に車庫へ。途中でブレーキを踏むとだめだとわかったのでした。怖かった～。

The snowy season has come. We had our first snow on December 1st. I was scared to drive into my garage because there was a lot of snow in the driveway when I came back home. I couldn't control my car; I couldn't go foreward. I had to back my car to the road in front of the driveway and try it again. I learned that is was not good to use the brake pedal. I went straight to the garage without stopping. I was very scared!

It is a picture of the pond in front of my house on the day the snow began to pile up.

2日でこんなに積もりました。池は凍っています。

This is a picture two days later. The pond froze over.

家の軒下にこんなに長いつららが出来ます。

I saw long icicles under the eaves.

日本の家は鎌倉にありますが、冬でもつららを見たことがないので、去年初めてこのつららを見たときびっくりしました。最近の気温は氷点下5度位です。寒いです！

I was very surprised to see them for the first time last winter because I have never seen an icicle in winter in Kamakura in Japan. The tempreture is around 23°F every day lately. It is very cold!

2週間後。池は完全に凍って雪も積もっています。

雪は降ったりやんだり、日中は降っていない日も多いのでそんなに積もっていません。

2 weeks later. The pond froze over completely; there is a little snow on it.

We have snow showers every day, but we don't have much snow.

Iguassu Falls in Argentina ～イグアスの滝Ⅱ

翌日、今度はアルゼンチン側の滝（悪魔ののど笛）を見に行った。
アルゼンチン側の国立公園もかなり広くて、
滝を見るために近くまでこのような列車に乗って行った。

The next day, we enjoyed the falls again but this time, from Argentina. This National Park was also very large.  We got in a train from the entrance to see the falls.

This is the entrance to Garganta del Diablo. We walked about 1km to the falls.

滝まで長いデッキが続いた。

There are many long observation decks.

デッキの上から見下ろしたところ。

滝が落ちる音は物すごい音で、水しぶきを沢山浴びた。

This is the Garganta del Diablo, which means "Devil's Throat." We looked down into it from the deck.

The sound of the falls was loud and we got splashed a lot with water.

下は水しぶきで真っ白になって見えないほど。

We couldn't see the bottom of the falls.

その後、小道を歩いて色々な場所から滝を見た。その途中で動物や鳥、蝶に出会うことができた。

After that, we followed a long natural trail to enjoy the falls from another direction.We saw animals, birds and butterflies on our way.

オニオオハシ

This is a toucan.

遠くの木の茂みにいたオニオオハシ。

この鮮やかなくちばしの色がひときわ目立っていた。

動物園の中ではなく、自然の中で見れたという事に感動。

We could see this toucan in the tree in the distance.

The beak was a very attractive orange color.

I was excited that I saw it in the wild, not in the zoo.

一羽がもう一羽に餌をあげているところ。

可愛らしく、見ていた人々から歓声が上がった。

At this moment; one bird gave food to the other. 

We cheered! They were very cute.

  

これは南米のアライグマ。何カ所かで見かけた。

顔は私が鎌倉で見るアライグマとは違い細長い顔をしていた。

This is a South American raccoon called a coatimundi. I saw a few of them.  Their faces are slender; they are different from the raccoons I saw in Kamakura in Japan.

ブラジルやアルゼンチンでは蝶が沢山飛んでいた。

滝を見ているときに手に蝶がとまった。

滝をバックにした蝶、この写真ちょっと良いと思いませんか？

There are a lot kinds of butterflies in Brazil and Argentina.

A butterfly stayed on my hand when I enjoyed the falls. Isn't this a nice picture of the butterfly with the falls?

Iguassu Falls in Brazil ~ イグアスの滝

イグアスの滝は世界遺産。

ブラジルとアルゼンチンの国境の国立公園の中にあり、

それぞれの国から見ることができる。

Iguassu Falls is a World Heritage Site. There is a national park on the border between Brazil and Argentina for each country.  We enjoyed it from both sides.

最初の日はブラジル側に行った。

大自然の中でダイナミックで美しかった。国立公園の中にあるので緑が多く、

見る価値が充分にあると、本当に感動しました。

The first day, I enjoyed the falls from the Brazilian side.

The falls is very dynamic and beautiful and is completely surrounded by nature. There is a lot of green, because it is in a huge National Park. It is worth seeing. I was very moved. 

写真を撮るのに良い場所の一つ。

This is a good spot to take a picture.

滝を色々な場所から見れるように、公園の中には

小道やこのような長いデッキがあった。

There are trails and long observation decks like this one in many places.

"サファリーツアー"に参加。ボートで滝つぼの真下に行った。スリル満点。洋服は見事なくらいにびしょ濡れに。このボートはまさにエンジンが付いた、ラフティングといった感じ。

We took a "safari tour." We went right to the basin of the falls by boat. It was exciting! Our clothes were completely soaked. The boat ride was like white water rafting, but faster because the boat had a motor.  We did not have oars!

後で私たちが乗ったボートを上から見下ろしました。
Later on, we were at a high point and we looked down and could see another boat like ours.

とても面白くて思い出に残る体験でした。

It was a very nice and exciting experience.

Rio de Janeiro II

ビーチに行ってみた。暑くはなくむしろ涼しいといった感じ。でも何人か泳いでいました。
海は透き通るような美しさで、青緑色でとても綺麗だった。

We went to the beach. The weather was not hot; it was almost cool. A few people enjoyed swimming. The sea was a very beautiful blue-green and very clear.

ボータファーゴ・プライア・ショッピングのフードコートで昼食。

ここはエビを使ったお店。

We had lunch at a food court in Batafogo Praia Shoping Mall.
This place in the food court feautred shrimp.

私はエビ入りピラフのようなものを注文。

I ordered a dish that was like pilaf with shrimp.

夫はエビ入りパスタを注文。

My husband ordered pasta with shrimp.

お互いに少しずつ味見をしたが、どちらも可もなく不可もなく。

We shared the dishes. They were OK.

昼食後、スターバックスを発見。

スタッフのお兄さん達は感じが良く、何とお釣りがないから、とタダにしてくれました。

ブラジルのコーヒーは、いつでもどこでも濃くて美味しかった。

After lunch we found Starbucks coffee.

They were very kind; they gave us coffee for free becuse they didn't have change.

All coffee we had in Brazil - whenever, wherever - was very delicious and strong.

　

このモールの中のあるお店でかっぱえびせん(?)を見つけた。

味は日本のかっぱえびせんとちょっと違い、エビの風味が薄かった。

日本で人気のかっぱえびせん、ブラジルで出会うとは・・

At a shop in the mall, I found this snack called "Ebicen."  It is Japanese rice crackers.

It tasted different from the ones I have had in Japan; it did not have a strong shrimp flavor.

It was interesting to find a Japanese snack in Brazil.  Ebicen is a Japanese brand - we spell it "Ebisen" in English and it is popular in Japan.

フードコートの外にデッキがあって、

そこから、このかわいらしい山、砂糖パン（写真左）が見えた。

前の海にヨットが浮かび素敵な光景。

They have a deck outside of the food court. We saw Sugar Loaf. It was secnic with a lot of yachts in the sea.

ホテルに帰る前に少しだけ歩いてみました。
道端にあったキオスク。
雑誌のディスプレイの仕方がこんなにユニーク。
We walked a little on our way to our hotel. This is the kiosk on the sidewalk.
It was very unique how they show magagines like this.

次の日、空港に向かうタクシーの中からはっきりと見えたキリスト像。
リオを発つ前にとにかく見れて幸運だった・・。

The next day, we could see the Chirst the Redeemer statue clearly from our taxi to the airport.
We were lucky to finally see it before we left Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro

日本に帰る前にイグアスの滝を見たくて、リオデジャネイロとイグアスの滝に行ってきました。

We went to Rio de Janeiro and Iguassu Falls because we wanted to see Iguassu Falls before we go back to Japan.

ホテルから見た、コパカバーナのビーチ。

夕方に着いたのでこんなにきれいな風景が見れました。

This is the picture of the famous beach, Copacabana; we saw it from our hotel. We arrived at the hotel in the evening. We saw this beautiful scene.

この晩はディナーとサンバショーに行きました。
南米ではシュラスコという肉料理が有名です。
シュラスコは串刺しの肉です。
各テーブルに給仕の人が回ってきてくれて、目の前で切ってくれます。
色々な肉があり、私はポークとチキンを食べましたが、美味しかったです。

We enjoyed dinner and watching Samba dancers. Churrasco is famous meat in South America. Churrasco means grilled meat served like a kebab. The waiters bring them to each table, and then they cut the meat in front of us like this. There are many kinds of meat. I enjoyed pork and chicken. It was delicious.

肉以外はブッフェで、そこで面白いものを発見。
タケノコにそっくりだったので食べてみたところ、柔らかくて甘酸っぱく食感もタケノコ。
でも、それは何とパルミートというヤシの新芽だということが後でわかりました。
食べるのに夢中で写真を撮り忘れたのが本当に残念。

We enjoyed the buffet. I saw something that looked like bamboo shoots. I tried it. I learned it was the palm shoots later, called Palmito. The texture was like bamboo shoots and the taste was sweet-sour. I felt sorry that I forgot to take a picture of it because I was very busy enjoying the meal.

サンバショーはとても華やかでした。

The Samba show was very gorgeous.

翌日はこのようなトラムでコルコバードの丘へ。頂上まで約30分。

The next day, we went to Corcovado by mountain tram like this. It took about 30 minutes to the top.

これがコルコバードの丘のキリスト像。

This is Christ the Redeemer.

丘というより山の頂上にある巨大なキリスト像。

晴れていれば、リオの町や山並みが見えるはずでしたが濃い霧のために全く見えず。

This is the top of the mountain. It is a statue of Jesus Christ.

If it was clear outside, we could also see the sight of town of Rio de Janeiro and a view of mountains.

We could see only the base of Chirst the Redeemer beause of a thick fog. We counldn't see the view at all.

次の日にもう一度行って見たものの、やはり同じでした。

We went there the next day again, but it was the same. 

キリスト像もこのようにはっきり見えなくて残念でしたが、神秘的でした。

I felt very sorry not to see Chirst the Redeemer or the view, but it looked mysterious and beautiful.
