Golden Week holidays

The holidays from April 29th to May 5th are known as Golden Week in Japan.
My son took his first long holiday since he started working and he returned to Kamakura. I was so happy to find signs that he had been in his room when we came back home from our two week trip. He text-messaged that he had returned to Kamakura and went to see his friends.

He had a nice time with his childhood friends. Another day, he brought his girlfriend here to meet us. He relaxed a lot during the holidays. My husband and I enjoyed this precious time with him; we learned more about his life. He looks reliable and grown up since he started to work.

My energetic father~

When my parents came to Kamakura, we enjoyed window shopping at the Komachi Street between Kamakura station and Ttsurugaoka Hachiman-gu. The street is a very popular street, as it has many restaurants and shops on both sides. My father bought a back-scratcher at a shop before my mother and I noticed that he did it. At the time, I wondered why he bought it at the shop, because I thought that he could buy one anywhere. However, it was fine;  he looked happy to get it. I lent him my shawl because he said it was cold. I took a picture of him; it shows that he doesn't care how he looks. It was too enjoyable not to take a picture of him.

He is energetic, even though he is 81 years old. He has been playing tennis twice a week since he started playing tennis when he was young. He sometimes goes to patrol with his neighborhood. He also loves reading books. He always says that it is important for him to keep exercising by playing tennis and using his brain by reading books and playing igo.

He is the oldest member of a tennis circle for people over 65 years old. I am very proud of him for continuing to play tennis. I am very happy that he is in good health.

The peony garden~

My parents had been looking forward to coming to Kamakura since I returned to Japan last September. There is Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu in Kamakura and they have a beautiful peony garden. Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is the most famous and popular Shinto shrine in Kamakura; it is one of the Important Cultural Properties in Japan.

Last week, I invited them to my house and we went to the shrine. For about ten days, it had been very cloudy in Kamakura, but finally, it was sunny. It is a good season to see the garden; winter peony is in full bloom by February. According to Hachiman-gu's website, peony is the symbol of fertility and nobility.

The peonies are protected against the snow by straws and umbrellas. When we entered the garden, we were moved by the sight of the garden. This picture shows how beautiful the peonies are.

They were pastel pink, bright pink, red, white and yellow. There is a Japanese proverb to describe a beautiful woman. "She stands as a grass peony, sits as peony, walks like a lily." I think the expression is right; the peonies were really beautiful and refined.

My father and I loved pastel pink. It is said that there are about one hundred species of peonies in the garden and it would have been more beautiful if we had seen them after a snowfall because there would have  been snow on the straw that covered them.

I was so happy to see that my parents were pleased.

A Day at a Mall with my Daughter

My daughter made plans to stay at our house on Friday night. I had been looking forward to seeing her for a long time. Even though I just saw her on New Year's Day, it still felt like it had been a long time since I had seen her.

I had been planning to go to the Terrace Mall Shonan with her because I knew that the mall was opened lately and it is the biggest mall in the Shonan area. (Shonan is a very famous beach area with a pretty island
named Enoshima. It is located southwest from Tokyo.) My daughter was also looking forward to going there.

I wanted to make the day trip by car as I learned it takes only 25 minutes to get to the mall from my house. However, I was very surprised to find that it was snowing that day. It was the first snow of this winter! I changed our plans - we would go there by train because I worried that the snow would accumulate by the afternoon. It was very convenient for us to go there by train; the mall is connected to Tsujido station.

At first, my daughter recommended that we go to a pancake café. She told me that the company that ran the pancake café also ran a burger café in Tokyo. The company's restaurants were stylish and cook, so she wanted to go to the pancake café in the mall.

Honestly, I didn't feel like eating sweet food before lunch at first, but I was mistaken. The pancakes were very light, delicious and not too sweet. We shared two kinds of pancakes with each other.

Honey Apple Pancake with Ricotta Cheese

After we enjoyed them, we walked around the mall. My daughter bought a scented hand cream that she liked. I found very cute sweets that were too cute not to buy, although we had just enjoyed American style pancake. They were very small Japanese sweets"Taiyaki" that are sold as souvenir. The packaging is very cute, too. (Taiyaki is a very popular sweet in Japan; they are fish-shaped cakes stuffed with sweet bean paste.)

The mall has 281 shops. There is a big movie theater there, too. My daughter suggested that we go see the movie"Mission Impposible: Ghost Protocol"at 3:10 pm.

She was very excited to watch it. She told me, "Tom is very cool, Mom". She was right. Tom Cruise was very cool in the scene when he ran across the side of the tallest building in the world in Dubai.

After we enjoyed the movie, we came back home. We had a nice dinner that my daughter brought with her. Right now, she is very interested in cooking with a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker sounds very helpful and convenient for working women. I am very sorry that it was too delicious for me to remember to take a picture! We enjoyed the cute Taiyaki sweets after diner. I thought they looked cuter than they tasted!

We talked with each other about many things and I was very glad to know her new life with her husband is very happy.
It was a nice girl's day for us!

My daughter's Wedding

I am sorry I haven't posted for a long time. I would like to tell you about the biggest event for my family since I returned to Japan last September; my daughter's wedding.

She got married in November at Hotel Nikko Tokyo. They didn't want to have a big ceremony and a party; they invited only a few relatives. Their ceremony and the party were held in their suite at the hotel. My daughter and her fiancé arranged every detail of the wedding and the party by themselves. It was a kind of surprise party for us parents. The groom's mother and I made albums with a lot of pictures from their births to graduation from univesities. There was a small garden connected to their suite. They wanted to have the ceremony there, but they had to performed it inside as it was raining.

This type of secular ceremony is gradually becoming popular in Japan. It was a very interesting experience for us, because it was the first time that we saw this style of a wedding. They said their vows, then they signed their marriage certificate. We signed it following the bride and groom. After that, they exchanged wedding rings.

I was signing their marriage certificate.
I was not the emcee!

The party was not big, but the process was the same as for a big party. They cut the wedding cake and reminisced about their childhoods with us. The party was held in a harmonious and comfortable atmosphere. My daughter looked very happy, a little nervous and she was a blushing bride. My husband I were moved to see the bride and groom so happy.

The groom is very kind, a good listener and gives good advice to my daughter. I think it would be very important for her to get married to a good listener. She used to tell me how her school days were and what she did in school every day until she grew up. Then, she continued telling me about her days even after she started to work.

They knew each other at the seminar class in the university. They were just friends at the time, and they bumped into each other coincidently after they started to work. Now they are husband and wife! Life is sometimes miraculous.
We really think they will be happy with help and understanding from each other.

(By the way, I couldn't believe that I am in the generation where I wore the Tomesode to my daughter's wedding! Tomesode is the traditional Japanese formal Kimono that the married women wear mainly for wedding ceremonies.)

10 days in Japan

It has been so long since I published a new post! I went back to Japan for about 10 days last month. It was the first time I had visited Japan since the large earthquake in March. I'm proud of the Japanese because they are tough and hang in there; they use fans instead of air-conditioners and they stopped the escalators or elevators in some places to save the electricity.  I will also try to do that because I will go back to Japan in September.

(Koi in a pond)

I was relieved to learn my children and my parents have become less anxious from the earthquake.

My daughter's kitchen; it looks organized.

My dad insisted on making breakfast for my mother and me. He made a firm decision to make breakfast. I accepted his generosity. I am really thankful that my parents are fine and living independently.
