ジョージア州アトランタにあるワールド・オブ・コカコーラ博物館に行きました。
In Atlanta, Georgia, we went to the World of Coca-Cola.

アトランタはコカコーラ誕生の地です。コカコーラの歴史、製造過程などを見た後、世界各国のコカコーラの試飲ができます。

Atlanta is the birthplace of Coca-Cola. We can try Coca-Cola from around the world, and after, we learned the history and how it is made.

私はアフリカのコカコーラを、夫はヨーロッパのコカコーラを飲みました。

I tried African Coca-Cola and my husband tried European Coca-Cola.

コカコーラが初めて売られたのは薬局だった、という話がとても印象的でした。
最初に薬として作られた時の二つの成分の名前からコカ・コーラという名前が付いたそうです。
コカはコカイン、またはコカという葉の名前から、コーラはコーラというカフェインが含まれている実の名前から来ていてその二つのゴロを合わせてコカ・コーラと名前をつけたそうです。
今のコカコーラはどちらも使われていません。


I was very impressed that when Coca-Cola was sold for the first time, it was in a pharmacy.  The name Coca-Cola comes from the two main ingredients from when it was first made as medicine.  Coca comes from "cocaine," or the "coca" leaf.  Cola, spelled kola, comes from the kola nut, which has caffeine in it. Today, Coca-Cola does not have cocaine or kola in it.

CNNセンター

アトランタに本社を置く世界最大のケーブルテレビ。スタジオ見学ツアーに参加。
話すのも早くて英語を聞き取ることはほとんど出来ませんでした・・こういう時は本当につらい。

This is the biggest cable TV in the world: CNN, headquarters in Atlanta. We went on a tour of CNN, but I had a hard time understanding the explanation.The tour guide talked fast! Listening to English is sometimes difficult for me..

ノーベル平和賞受賞者・キング牧師ビジターセンター博物館

We also went to the Nobel-prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr. visitor center.

権運動に貢献した人々の足跡がありました。写真の手前右側に見えるのはローザ・パークスの足跡。

彼女は1955年バスの運転手命令に従わず白人に席を譲るのを拒み逮捕されました。そのこうどうが公民権運動のきっかけになり、有名になった女性です。

There is a walking trail to the entrance from where we parked.  We walked the trail and we saw footprints near the building in the trail.  The footprints at the right of the picture are from Rosa Parks.  When she got on a bus in the 1955, the bus driver told her to give her seat to a white man and she refused.  She was arrested, and that was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States.  She became famous.

キング牧師はガンジーの思想にとても影響を受けました。
博物館の中には彼の公民権運動を今に伝える多くの展示物がありました。その運動がどんなに大変なことだったのかわかりました。

In front of the entrance to the building, we saw a statue of Gandhi.  Dr. King was greatly inspired by Gandhi's way of thinking.  There are many displays to explain the Civil Rights Movement and its history.  They tell how difficult the fight for Civil Rights was.

Stone Mountain

ストーン・マウンテンを見学
ジョージア州アトランタにある高さ約251メートルの花崗岩の山です。麓からロープーウェイが出ていてそれに乗って山の上に向かいます。途中の山肌には南北戦争の三大将軍の彫刻が見えました。ロープーウェイからは下の美しい紅葉も見ることができました。

This is a mountain of granite named Stone Mountain; the height is 251 m. (825 ft.). We got on a ropeway at the foot which took us to the top. We could see a carving of the three greatest soldiers in the Civil War on our way from the window. We also saw a very beautiful scene of autumn colors below.

アトランタはちょうど今、紅葉のシーズンで本当にきれいでした。

It is the best season for seeing autumn colors in Atlanta.

We enjoyed them.

The top of the mountain is a bare face of granite like this.

Birthplace of Helen Keller~ ヘレン・ケラーの生家

アメリカ南部のアラバマ州、ジョージア州に行ってきました。 最初にアラバマ州にあるヘレンケラーの生家を見に行きました。

We went to Alabama and Georgia in the southern United States.
First, we went to the birthplace of Helen Keller.

母屋の裏に出るとヘレン・ケラーが初めて水という言葉を理解したことで有名な井戸もそのまま保管されていました。

母屋の右横にヘレンがサリバン先生と二人で2週間を過ごしたコテージ。
サリバン先生はヘレンの癇癪をコントロールするには両親からしばらく話す必要があると思ったからです。
This is the cottage where Helen spent about two weeks with Miss Sullivan to keep away from her parents. The teacher realized she needed to have the time in order to be able to control her tantrums and teach her.

三重苦を持っていたヘレンに言葉を教えたサリバン先生は本当に偉大な人だと思いました。『奇跡の人』とはヘレン・ケラーのことだと思っていましたが、実はサリバン先生のことだそうです。映画『奇跡の人』をもう一度見直してみたいと思いました。
 
I think that Miss Sullivan was really great. She taught the meaning of words to Helen who couldn't hear, speak, or see. There is a movie about Miss Sullivan called "The miracle worker." I learned that the title is about Miss Sullivan. The Japanese title is "The miracle person", so I have been thinking the person is Helen Keller.
I want to watch "The miracle person" again.

Food ~ 食べ物事情

娘からのメールには、以下のように、本人が上手にできたと納得した時にだけ（？）、お料理の写真が添付されている。

My daughter sometimes sends emails to me with pictures of her meals when she is particularly satisfied with them.

白菜とバラ肉の煮込み

Stewed pork and Napa Cabbage

なかなか上手じゃないの・・。美味しそうだから私も作ってみよう・・と思うが、ここで作るのは難しい。豚の薄切り肉や白菜が手に入りにくいからだ。

It looked delicious. I want to try cook it, but it is difficult to cook it here. It is not easy to get thinly sliced pork or Napa cabbage.

近くのスーパーで薄切り肉を頼んだことがあるが、驚くことに包丁で切ってくれて「この位でどう？」と聞かれた。生姜焼の厚さは充分にあった。ハム売り場では好みに応じて機械でスライスしてくれるのに、なぜか肉売り場では出来ないらしい。

その上、白菜がとにかく高い。ひと玉$8～12（およそ800～1200円）もする。

I have ordered sliced pork at the supermarket. I asked the man to slice the pork as thinly as possible . The man asked me, " How is it?" and showed it to me after he sliced it, I was very surprised that he sliced the pork with a knife. It was thick enough to cook "shouga-yaki" (Japanese pork sauté).

I wondered why they don't slice thin meat with a slicer, although they sliced thin ham for us according to personal preference with a slicer. Besides, the Napa cabbage is very expensive; it is about $ 8-12 for one.

ところでこのスーパーには寿司コーナーがあり、そこではお寿司を作って売っている。

先日、スパイダーロールという巻き寿司を買ってみた。
中の具には何が入っているのか、作っていた人に確認したところ、
『ソーシャル・クラブ』と言った…と思った。そんな名前の蟹あったっけ？
・・あるはずがない。実は私の聞き間違いで、『ソフト・シェル・クラブ』と言ったのだった。
情けないがそう聞こえてしまったのだが、後で笑ってしまった。
ちなみにソフト・シェル・クラブとは脱皮直後の柔らかな蟹のことで、蟹の種類ではない、ということも後で知った。

By the way, there is a sushi corner in this supermarket. They demonstrate and sell sushi there. One day, I bought a "Spider roll." I asked him what is in it. He told me that he used "Social crab" for it; I wondered why I have never heard the name social crab.  Oh, no! No! I heard "social crab" instead of "soft-shell crab." I felt foolish that I had misheard it, and I laughed about it later.

Incidentally I learned that soft shell crab isn't actually a name of the type of crab used, it is a description. We call any crab that must be eaten within four days of molting "soft shell crab."

Spider Roll

このスパイダー・ロールはとても美味しかった。

中にはそのソフト・シェル・クラブをフライにしたものとキュウリ、アボカド等が入っていて、ちょっぴりスパイシーな味がした。

お寿司の上に見えるのは『とびこ』。とても美味しかったが5つ入りで＄7.99もしたのだった。

The spider roll was delicious. They use deep fried soft shell crab, cucumber and avocado and so on.

The taste is a little spicy. What you see on top of the sushi is Tobiko. The sushi was not only delicious, but also expensive: $7.99 for 5 pieces.

日本にいるときは魚ばかりを食べていた私だが、バッファローでは新鮮な魚が手に入りにくいため、肉を調理することが多くなった。肉は日本よりおいしくて安いということも分かった。

やはり、その土地のものが一番おいしいのだと分かった。ここは肉とチーズの種類がとても多い。

I often eat fresh fish in Japan, but it is difficult to get it in Buffalo. I learned that meat is more delicious and cheaper in Buffalo than in Japan. I also learned that eating food close to where it comes from makes it the most delicious. They have many kind of meat and also cheese here.

そんなことを思っていたある日、他のお店でこのような魚を見つけた。
One day, I found fish like this at a store.



Smoked Salmon

燻製の鮭

魚臭くなくて、燻製の香りが良い。これも美味しかった。でもこれも高くて一切れ約8ドルもした。

The smoked salmon doesn't have a fishy smell, and I enjoyed the smoky flavor. But it was also expensive, about $8 for one piece.  

そしてアメリカでは甘いものは簡単に見つかるが、しょっぱいものが少ない。

ポテトチップスは胃にもたれるし・・そんな時見つけたスナック『さやえんどう』。

ポテトチップスよりはさっぱりとしている。

Americans have a lot of sweets. We don't often find salty snacks. Potato chips are too heavy for my stomach. I found a snack of flavored peas. It is lighter than potato chips.

これが面白いことに同じスーパーで2種類置いてある。

『Saya』はアジア食品のコーナーにあり、もう一つは『Snapea Crisps』でなぜか野菜売り場に置いてある。

It is interesting for me to learn there are 2 kinds of flavored pea snacks, and they are put in different places in the store. One is named Saya; they are in the Asian food corner. Another one is named Snapea Crisps; they are in the vegetable department. I wonder why.

味は微妙に違った。『Saya』は日本の『さやえんどう』と同じ味、コクがあるように思った。

私はやはり断然『Saya』のほうが好きだ。『Snapie crisps』はアメリカの人好みの味付けになっているようだ。

The taste of each one is a little different. I like Saya because its taste is strong flavored with pea, it is same with the Japanese snack. I think the taste of the Snapea crisps is good for Americans.

Christmas in the Country ~ Part 2

クラフトショー中には簡単な食事ができるお店がいくつかありました。
バーベキュー・ポークを注文してみました。
There were a few food shops in the craft show. I ordered BBQ Pork.

このようなアメリカ式サンドイッチでした。

見た目は今一つでしたがとても美味しかったのです。

お肉は細かく裂いてあって、甘辛ソースで煮詰めたような感じでした。

 It  was a sandwich like this.

It was very delicious.

 The meat was pulled and boiled down with salty-sweet sauce.

歩いているときに、可愛らしいものを発見。日本のお寿司！目立っていたので『かわいいお寿司！』と人が集まっていました。バッファローでも、お寿司は人気です。

I saw these very cute things, they looked like sushi. It was very attractive and colorful. Some people looked at this, and they said "Very cute sushi!." Sushi is popular in Buffalo, too.

このお店、猫ちゃんグッズのお店でした。このお寿司は猫が噛んで遊ぶためのおもちゃでした。
このお寿司の中に猫が大好きなイヌハッカという乾燥ハーブが入っています。
日本でいう”猫にまたたび”のようなものでしょうか・・
お寿司の右隣にあるのは中国のお菓子『フォーチュン、クッキー』。
最初は稲荷寿司かと思いました。
だってお店の人がお寿司ととこの菓子をパックにして売っていたんです。
彼女は親切に説明してくれました。オリエンタル、と言っていましたが・・・う~ん？

This shop was full of cat's goods. This "sushi" is a toy for cats.  It is filled with catnip. There are Chinese fortune cookies on the right. I thought it was another sushi: Inarizushi first, because the staff packed three pieces of sushi and two fortune cookies in the same plastic container. The lady kindly told me that the pack was "Oriental."

猫は飼っていないものの、かわいかったし、面白かったので3つ買ってしまいました。
ご飯の部分は白いタオルですが芯の具と巻いている海苔はフェルトです。

I bought 3 pieces of sushi, although I don't have a cat. They are very cute and interesting. They used the white towel for rice, and felt for the ingredients of sushi and seaweed.

入れてくれた箱も、このように可愛いものでした。

なぜか気になるケトルコーンのお店。
この日は雨だったので外にあったケトルコーンのお店は有り難いことにすいていました。
味は塩味が少しあるものの、ほんのりした甘さでした。

Kettle corn is very attractive food to me.
I was so glad to know that they didn't have a line in front of the shop because it was rainy. The taste was a little salty and sweet.

出来あがると手前の樽に移します。

He made popcorn in a big kettle like this.

After the corn finished popping, he put it in a barrel.

もうすぐ出来あがるから、移す瞬間を撮ったら、と言われたのに

ドジな私はうまく撮れずに失敗。

一瞬で手前の樽に入ってしまいました。

They advised me that I could take a picture when he put it from the kettle to the barrel. It was almost done. I felt so sorry, because I couldn't do it. The popcorn was put into the barrel in a split second.

そして、こんな風に袋に詰めます。

手前の女の子が持っているのはMサイズ、後の女性が持っているのはLサイズ。

日本では見られないすごい大きさ。

They packed them like this.

The bag that the girl is packing is M for medium. The bag that the lady is packing  is L for large. They were very big bags.

多くの人がこの一番大きいサイズを買っていました。

私は一番小さいサイズを購入。

一番大きい袋は私が手に下げると、床につくかも、という長さです。

Most people bought the L size.
I bought the small size.

The biggest one is big enough to touch the floor if I carried it in my hand.

Christmas in the Country ~ Craft show

バッファローで一番大きいと言われているクラフトショーに行って来ました。家から車で1時間ほどかかりました。どうしても行きたくて、初めて1時間の道のリを自分で運転したのでした。
金曜日で雨だったのにもかかわらず、混んでいました。

I went to Christmas in the Country, the biggest craft show in Buffalo. It took about one hour to get there from my house. It is the first time I drove by myself to a place where it took about one hour because I wanted to go there badly. It was very crowded in spite of being Friday and  it was a rainy day.

まずはサンディのショップへ。
First, I went to "American Doll Boutique," Sandie's shop.

Sandie made many clothes for the dolls.  It was amazing that she made all of the clothes by herself.

She has been making clothes for dolls for about 20 years.

洋服以外にもこのように帽子や靴,靴下,アクセサリーも揃っています。

There are not only clothes, but also many cute hats, shoes, socks and accessories for dolls.

大勢のお客さんのが来ていて大忙しでした。

They were very busy because they had many visitors.

私も家の人形にシックな洋服を買ってみました。

I bought clothes in quiet colors for my doll.

このクラフトショーは5つの建物の中で開かれています。

This craft show is in five buildings.

アクセサリー、ガラス製品、フォトフレームなど、絵画、装飾品など
100店ほどありました。お昼に着いたのに見終わったときには夕方になっていました。

There were about 100 crafters there: accessories, glass, photo frames, paintings, drawings, decorations, etc. I arrived here around noon, and when I finished looking around there, I noticed that it had become evening.

サンタクロースも子供たちを喜ばせていました。

The local food in Buffalo

バッファローといえば、『バッファロー・チキンウイング』。
手羽先をフライにしてスパイシーなソースで絡めてあります。
このお料理の起源については諸説あるようですが、その中の一つは次のようなものです。

Buffalo is famous for "Buffalo Chicken Wings."
Buffalo chicken wings are chicken wings fried with spicy sauce.
There are a few stories about their origin. This is the one of the stories.

バッファローのある居酒屋のオーナー夫妻のもとに、息子がお腹をすかせた友達を大勢連れて帰ってきました。
母親はすぐに作れそうな物を、と考え、手羽先をフライにしてスパイシーソースで絡めることにしました。それにセロリとブルーチーズソースを添えて出したところ、それは予想外に好評だったのでレストランのメニューに加えた、というものです。

The owner of a bar and his wife lived in Buffalo. One day, their son came back home with his many friends; they were very hungry. His mother wondered what she could cook fast. She decided to fry chicken wings and toss them in cayenne hot sauce.  She served them with celery and blue cheese sauce. They loved them more than she expected. She and her husband added them to their menu.

バッファロー・チキンウイングの有名店として、『ダフス』と『アンカー・バー』があります。
そんなに有名ではありませんが『バービル』も美味しいところです。
私の家は『ダフス』に近いので時々行きます。
このお店で面白いのはソースの辛さが8段階もあることです。

マイルド→マイルド・ミディアム→ミディアム→ミディアム・ホット→ホット→スーパーホット→デス→アルマゲドン

デス、アルマゲドンに至っては一体どれだけ辛いのでしょうか・・
お店のメニューには次のように注意書きがあります。

There are two famous chicken wingsrestaurants in Buffalo: Duff's and Anchor Bar. There is one less famous restaurant in East Aurora (a village in the Buffalo area) called Barbill which also has very good chicken wings! We sometimes visit Duff's because we live near it. They have 8 grades of hot sauce:

Mild Mild-Medium Medium Medium-Hot Hot Super-Hot Death Armagedon

I can't imagine how hot the "Death" and "Armageddon" are. They warn like this.

夫も私も辛いものが苦手なので、マイルドか、せいぜいマイルドミディアムです。
そしてこのチキンウイングにはセロリ、ニンジンとブルーチーズのソースが付いてきます。

My husband I don't like spicy food, and we always order Mild or Mild Medium.
Buffalo wings are traditionally served with celery(and carrot) sticks and blue cheese dressing.

このときは、フレンチ・フライとオニオン・リングを追加しました。

We also ordered french fries and onion rings the day this picture was taken.

食べているときは美味しいのですが、次の食事は抜こうと思うくらい食べ応えがあります。数年前に食べた名古屋の手羽先の甘辛揚げを思い出しました。醤油の甘辛味も美味しかったっけ。

We enjoyed them very much, but we thought we had better skip our next meal, because they are very filling and heavy. I remembered chicken wings with soy sauce and suger in Nagoya that I enjoyed some years ago. They were very delicious, too.

 

5月にオバマ大統領がバッファローを視察に訪れた際、ダフスでこのチキンウィングを買って帰りました。地元ではかなり話題になってテレビでも放映されていました。

When President Obama visited Buffalo in May, he bought Buffalo chicken wings to go at Duff's. It became a hot topic to us and we also heard a lot about it on TV.


もうひとつ、バッファローでの有名な食べ物として『スポンジ・キャンディー』があリます。
Another famous Buffalo food is "Sponge Candy".

このお菓子の不思議な触感については説明するのが難しいのですが・・
It is difficult to explain the texture.

中はこのようになっています。
The inside looks  like this.

砂糖を溶かし、固めてから外側をチョコレートでコーティングしてあリます。中はサクッとしていて口の中で溶けてチョコレートと一緒になる感触は独特です。中はカルメ焼きに似た感じでしょうか・・
去年の冬以来買っていませんでした。
チョコレートなので夏は溶けるということと、大好きなので食べ過ぎて飽きてしまったというのが主な理由ですが、それ以外にも食べ過ぎて体重が増えてしまった！ということもあります。

They melt sugar and caramelize it and coat it with chocolate. The texture is crisp. When I put it in my mouth, the inside melts and mixes with the chocolate. The texture of the inside is very unique. The texture is similar with a Japanese sweet called "Karume-yaki." I bought sponge candy last winter; I haven't been able to buy it for a long time.  There are two reasons.  The first reason is that it melts in the summer.  The second reason is that I loved it so much that I ate many pieces of it and I got sick of it.  Another reason is that I gained weight from eating too much of it.　

スポンジ・キャンディ、本当に久しぶり！
Americans have an expression, "Long time, no see" to greet a friend they have not seen in a long time.  I would say to the sponge candy, "Long time, no EAT," because I waited all summer before I could eat sponge candy again.

Happy Halloween!

ハロウィーンではとても楽しい体験ができました。
まず、前日に買い物に行ったお店で色々な仮装しているスタッフを見るのも楽しかったし、
買い物客の中にも凝った仮装をしている人がいて、とても印象的だったので写真を撮らせてもらったりしました。

I enjoyed my Halloween experience. First, I enjoyed a vairety of costumes that some of the staff of the store were wearing when I went shopping the day before Halloween. I also had an opportunity to take a picture of a man with an impressive costume for Halloween.

 

また、駐車場でもこんなに凝った車を見ました。
I was surprised to see a decorated car.

ハロウィーンの夜は近くの子供たちが私たちの家を訪れてくれました。
Many children visited our house on Halloween night.

2～3人で来ることが多かったのですが中には8人くらいで来たり、お母さんと一緒に来た可愛らしい2~3歳くらいの女の子もいました。
6：15から8：00位の間に全部で50人くらい来てくれたでしょうか。
思っていたよリ沢山の子供たちが来てくれたので嬉しくなりました。

Most of them came to my house in groups of two or three people. Some were in groups of around eight. There was even a very little cute girl who was about two or three years old with her mother. We had around 50 children between about 6:15~8:00. I was very glad to have more children than I expected.

後ろに見えるのは『パンプキン・ツリー』とシナモンの香りのするデコレーション用の箒です。

I decorated the entrance of my house to welcome the children. Here is my doll dressed for Halloween, my two Jack-o-Lanterns, and a "pumpkin tree" and cinnamon-scented broom in the background．

カボチャの形をしていて本当に可愛らしいです。

ナス属の植物だそうです。

This is a "Pumpkin Tree". It looks very cute. It is a member of a solanum family.

これがシナモンの香りがついた箒。

This is a decorative cinnamon-scented broom.

どちらも、ハロウィーンやサンクスギビング、伝統的な秋の飾りつけのためのものです。
They are considered decorations for both Halloween and Thanksgiving - another Autumn tradition．
